Calgary Daycare Worker Pleads Guilty to Assaulting 13-Month-Old Baby
In a shocking and heart-wrenching case, a daycare worker in Calgary has admitted to multiple assaults on a 13-month-old baby over a span of three days. Rita Niure, 30, who was employed at Kidzee Early Learning and Daycare in northeast Calgary, pleaded guilty to these disturbing acts, which took place in December 2022.
Disturbing Incidents Unveiled
The incidents came to light after the baby, referred to as RD to protect his identity, began attending the daycare on December 1, 2022. Just a couple of days later, RD’s parents noticed significant changes in his behavior. He appeared fearful and distressed, particularly around family members, which was out of character for the normally cheerful child.
The situation escalated on December 10 when RD's parents observed bruises on his body. Concerned and alarmed, they took him to the hospital, prompting a police investigation. Authorities reviewed CCTV footage from the daycare, covering the period from December 1 to December 10, 2022. What they found was deeply disturbing.
Multiple Instances of Abuse
The CCTV footage revealed multiple instances of Niure abusing the young child. According to the agreed statement of facts read aloud by prosecutor Rebecca Ross, the video showed Niure slapping RD in the face, dragging him by his leg, and throwing him roughly during nap time. On several occasions, Niure could be seen aggressively shaking the baby. In one particularly distressing instance, she snapped a blanket at the toddler, and on another, she threw RD face-first onto his mat and held him down with her leg.
These appalling actions left a trail of physical and emotional trauma. RD’s mother, in a victim impact statement read aloud in court, expressed the profound emotional scars and guilt she feels over the abuse her son endured. She described the ordeal as a source of immense trauma, not just for RD but for the entire family.
The Legal Proceedings
In court, Niure pleaded guilty to the charges, acknowledging her abusive actions. The prosecution, led by Rebecca Ross, recommended a jail sentence of four to six months followed by a year of probation. However, the defense, represented by lawyer Ronverg Mendoza, argued for a conditional sentence order of 12 months followed by 18 months of probation. Justice Paul Mason, who presided over the case, will deliver his sentencing decision next month.
